Addictions don't start in and of themselves, but rather through a searching for a fulfillment of some sort, in our lives. Take smoking for example, you didn't just wake up one day and say, "hey, I think I will start smoking"; but more likely it was presented to you in the form of, "here, try this, it makes you cool", or some other equally tempting scenario addressing a void in your life. These voids are what the temptations speak to.
We are tempted by things that seem more exciting, more inviting and more fulfilling to us than our everyday living provides. Rather it's some one or some thing, we all have a weakness or void that seeks attention, and satan is all too happy to provide that thing and make it look absolutely perfect; or seem like just what we need at the time.
We have a choice of whether we will act on that temptation, or use what God provides for us in 1 Corinthians 10:13: There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
He WILL NOT let any temptation be so great that He will not provide you an out from it! We just have to CHOOSE to take that out; rather it's walking away, keeping quiet, calling a friend, praying, hanging with different friends, etc., there is an out! Sometimes, we just don't want to follow that out.
And likewise, know that temptation does not come from God; James 1:13
Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man. So temptation comes from the devil knowing our weaknesses and preying on them to try to get us to succumb to his will.
I have personally not (by the Grace of God) been addicted to anything that I know of, but I have seen it's devastation first hand. It does not mean you any good, it does not care who you are, and it does not care what your circumstances are. We are all created by God to be loving people, giving love, getting love and living in love. When we allow those controllable temptations to enter our lives, we are substituting that love for lustful desires. Again, lust is not just sexual, it is pride, ego, attention, belonging, etc.; anything that you long for or have a strong desire for is lusting.
There is a way out of addiction and that is through Jesus' saving Grace and Mercy. We are all sinners of something, everyday of our lives, and all need the covering of God's Mercy over our sin sick souls; but happy is he who has their joy in the Lord, because Jesus can, and will, wash away all of those sins if we continue to keep coming to HIM for forgiveness and asking for His cleansing Grace. He will not turn His children away if we come to Him in true repentance. He will give us the strength we need to continue on ONE MORE DAY, and each day that we remain under His salvation. Thank you Jesus for allowing us to come to you when we need you and those times when we THINK we don't!
